F Y I --Teaching the First R Controlled Sound. . ar
R is the angriest and strongest letter in the alphabet. Think of it as the lion's roar. R is angry and strong enough to change the sound of any short vowel that dares to come in front of it.
In the combination ar, the /a/ sound is completely vanquished and the r seems to be saying its own name. But don't be fooled! A consonant never says its name.
A child who is introduced to his sounds with the uniquely designed Alpha-Read Learning Kit is not likely to make the common error of writing cr for car or rm for arm. He has learned from the very beginning that every word must have a vowel sound and he will know that the opening of his mouth indicates a vowel sound. At the instant that he starts to say /ar/ and feels his mouth opening, he will anticipate the need for a vowel sound before the /r/. Just a brief explanation is all that is required to help the Alpha-Read learner accept the concept that the powerful, angry r alters the sound of /a/ so that the combination /ar/ sounds exactly the same as the alphabet name of r.
More about other r controlled sounds (er, ir, or, ur) at the proper time.
